WCS to host Area All-State festival this weekend The Walton Central School District will host the 2023 NYSSMA Zone 8 Area All-State Music Festival on Friday and Saturday, November 17 and 18. Three ensembles will be featured this year – treble choir, concert band, and mixed choir. Some of the best student musicians from a five-county area are selected to be part of these musical ensembles. To be considered, students must perform a minimum of a level four NYSSMA solo. Zone 8 is made up of Delaware, Chenango, Madison, Otsego, and Schoharie counties. Students were selected in June, according to their ratings on solos. The final group represents 31 schools. The musicians have been practicing on their own and with their teachers, and will come together Friday to rehearse as a group from 4-8:30 p.m. They will also rehearse from 9 a.m. until the 3 p.m. concert on Saturday. The directors for the ensembles are: Mixed Choir: G. Roberts Kolb (Marjorie and Robert W. McEwen Professor of Music and Director of Choral Music at Hamilton College.) Concert band: Bradley Ethington (Director of Bands at Syracuse University) Treble choir: Michael C. Lister (Director of Choirs at University at Albany) Tickets for the concert are available at the door. The cost is $6 for adults, and $4 for students.

Through a UPK grant, Townsend Elementary was able to purchase a program called “All Kids Bike.” The program comes with 24 student bikes, 24 helmets, an instructor bike, and pedal kits. It also includes eight classes of instructor training. The first five primarily focus on balancing the bike, and the final three focus on pedaling while balancing. The plan is to implement this program with UPK, kindergarten, and first-grade students. With being able to integrate this program into the curriculum, it gives students the opportunity to learn how to ride a two-wheeled pedal bike, and also know what measure of safety to follow while they are riding their bikes at home. #WeAreWalton #WaltonCSD #WaltonPride

Thanks to continued grant funding from the Catskill Watershed Corporation, Hanford Mills once again came to Townsend Elementary to offer students hands-on activities to support the school’s curriculum, provide education about watersheds and how students are connected to them, and the effect they have on water systems. Recently, second graders learned about hydro-science. Students were able to see how many drops of water fit on the surface of a penny and if water can move by itself. Through a series of fun and simple experiments. Students explored the interesting properties of water. #WeAreWalton #WaltonCSD #WaltonPride
