Seventh graders recently competed in this year’s Chemist Celebrare Earth Week (CCEW) illustrated poem contest, which was open to K-12 students. It was a chance to create and showcase original illustrated poems, incorporating a scientific concept related to the theme.
Students learned about glaciers in science with Miss Fowler, wrote a limerick poem in English with Ms. Lattimer, and illustrated their poem with Mrs. Fassler.

Throughout the first semester of personal health and safety, students became certified through the American Red Cross in CPR, AED, and first aid. At the end of the semester, the students had the opportunity to practice mock emergency scenarios.
Students walked around the building until stumbling upon an emergency and would need to provide care. One student would take the lead and begin the initial first aid care, and another student is sent to get the AED and first-aid kits. A third student was sent to call 911 (school nurses served as mock dispatchers) and, lastly, another student recorded what happens on a rubric and provides any prompts/feedback to the lead student.
A special thank you to teachers and students who helped make it possible. Some of the teachers and their “injuries” were Mrs. Fassler (art supply item stuck in her arm), Mrs. Hoffmeister (fallen and had a hurt baby), Mrs. Rosa (choking), and Mr. Kane (allergic reaction).
This aspect of the class helps students have a good perspective and allows them to reflect on why their certification is important and why it can be life-saving. Great job by all involved!
