Students in Mrs. Rosa’s Anatomy and Physiology class met the cellular organelles through a round of Cell Harmony. Each student was tasked with creating a biological profile of one cell organelle and then were invited to a speed dating event in which they took on the persona of that organelle.
The students had a great time meeting the organelles and finding a cellular match.

DCMO BOCES recently joined other BOCES from around the state to host a “Welcome to Student School Board Members” event, in conjunction with the New York State Education Department.
Twelve students from DCMO component schools in Norwich for the event. Those presenting virtually included: Robert Schneider (NYSSBA Executive Director), New York State Senator Shelley Mayer, NYS Assembly member Carrie Woerner, Board of Regents Chancellor Lester Young, NYSSBA President Sandra Ruffo, NYSSBA Deputy Director and General Counsel Jay Worona, and NYS Education Commissioner Betty Rosa.
Walton’s Ex-Officio Student Board Member Kai Storrer was one of the students who participated.
Following the presentations, the students participated in a community building circle, which is a communications/engagement strategy promoting the elevating of voices and belonging for adults and students.
The ultimate goal of the gathering provided student board members with an understanding of their roles and responsibilities, connect them with state and local education leaders, and celebrate their sense of community service and leadership.

In Small Animal Care class, students recently engaged in a project focused on pet responsibility, which allowed each student to take home a “pet.”
This experience simulated the daily demands of pet ownership, requiring students to meet the needs of their pet, and documenting their care, challenges, and insights in a daily log.
Through this hands0on approach, students discovered the importance of consistency, patience, and adaptability to gain a deeper appreciation for the commitment and effort involved in keeping a living creature happy and healthy.
Ultimately, the project instilled empathy and highlighted that pet ownership is a privilege demanding careful consideration and a genuine dedication to providing optimal care.

Before Saturday’s home opener, the Walton CSD football team celebrated coaches Jim Hoover and Gary Backus for being part of the program for 50 years. The duo has been part of the program since 1976.
Hoover, who is Section Four’s all-time winningest football coach with 318 victories, has served as an assistant to son Adam Hoover since he retired as the head coach following the 2016 season. On Saturday, Hoover and Backus were surrounded by families, including their children, grandchildren and many former players, fellow coaches, and fans.
During the celebration, they had an “Orange Crush” toast as well as a meet-and-greet event following the game. At that reception, many photos and other items were on display. They also received a plaque, and a custom helmet, which will be on display at the school, and there were commemorative t-shirts handed out. Prior to the game, the national anthem was performed by their granddaughters.
Congratulations to both for this amazing milestone!

Earlier this week, students in Mrs. Rosa’s AP Biology class were asked to determine if the presence of a gall affected the growth of goldenrod. After examining the plants, each group formulated an experimental question, made their hypothesis, and then collected data in order to answer their question.
Students continued their study by performing statistical tests and presenting their findings to their classmates. They also opened the galls to find a variety of insect larvae living inside.

Walton CSD high school music students recently took part in the High Note Music Festival in Hershey, Pa.
The ensembles – band, orchestra, and chorus – have been preparing all semester to perform for the adjudicators at the festival. There were two judges, both seasoned college music professors, who gave written and recorded comments as they listened to the groups perform.
All three groups received a rating of “excellent.” Following the performances, the students had the chance to enjoy Hershey Park.
