As we start showing off all the bike work and creations students had this year during Sal Salvia’s Transportation class, we first will show off Mr. Salvia’s bike! He works along the students each year as they tackle this project, creating something of his own.
This is Mr. Salvia’s description of his bike:
This year, my bicycle project that I decided to work on with the Transportation class, is a Worksman foldable bicycle that was rusty, but still had good potential. I liked that it was foldable, and it seemed durable. I also found out that the company that makes these bicycles is America’s oldest bicycle company, starting in 1898.
I decided for the build this year to be a restoration. I completely took the bicycle apart, cleaned everything and painted all the pieces, which took a lot of patience. This bike is a single-speed model with a coaster brake and has 20-inch wheels. I was surprised that the tires were still good. The spokes on the rims are 11-gauge, which are thicker than most spokes today.
This bike was from the 1960’s. My favorite part of the restoration was painting all of the pieces separately, then the final assembly.
We will continue with student projects over the next several weeks! Great work!

This year in Sal Salvia’s transportation class, students focused on bicycles, learning how to take one completely apart, and then reassembling it. To accomplish this task, they used a variety of tools and techniques.
The students gained experience working with wrenches, sockets, allen keys, a mig welder, chain tool, and pedal wrench, among other items. Some students also took it to the next level, making changes to the bicycle design and setup. Each student was responsible for keeping the parts organized and clean. Mr. Salvia said the students enjoyed the project, and had a great experience.
Pictured are the students in the two classes. Over the course of the next several weeks, we will be highlighting individual students with their project, as well as a write up they each did on their project explaining their bike.
Great work by all of the students!

Congratulations to junior Grace Walley, who recently set two records for the Walton/Downsville indoor track and field team.
Both records she broke were ones she previously owned.
She won the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 10 inches, which is the top throw in the state this season. She also set the record for the weight throw with a distance of 32-7.5!
Great job!

Students in Sal Salvia’s manufacturing class built a six-string box guitar this year. Each student built their own pieces for their guitar.
The class started out machining the guitar neck, which was made from maple hardwood. They used the jointer and planer for this part. Then they used the table saw, radial arm saw, drill press, power sanders, and many hand tools to make all of the pieces for the guitars. A lot of patience was required for this project.
Students decided between aluminum or brass for the guitar nut, and most used a 16d nail for the bridge. Some students even started to learn how to play “happy birthday” on their guitar toward the end of the semester.
Pictured are: Front (from left): JiaLin He, Miley Dunbar, Landon Darcy, and Mr. Salvia. Middle (from left): Owen Hodges and Damian Fox. Back (from left): Kyle Schamber, Caden Scofield, Mason Finch, Zayden Haskins, Linkin Backus, Tony Catalano, Braxton Wood, Eli Kingsbury, London Gardner, and Chris Caffery.

NOTICE: Due to an unexpected electrical issue, the power went off three times at our MS/HS campus this morning. The disruption was minimal and we have resolved the issue for now and will be looking into it more. Please note, our NYSED Regents exams will continue as scheduled, unless you receive a school messenger stating that has changed.
Thank you.

Students in 9th-grade ELA recently finished up reading “To Kill a Mockingbird.” As part of the finish to the book, the class used “readers theatre” to reenact the trial scene from the book. Students performed with enthusiasm and were all engaged and invested in the activity.
What a great learning experience!
