Three Walton wrestlers set for states

Three Walton CSD wrestlers will compete for state championships this Friday and Saturday at the Times Union Center in Albany.

Seniors Caleb Robinson and Chandler Merwin; and sophomore Cody Merwin will all look to win their first championship when wrestling begins at 10 a.m. Friday morning.

Quarterfinals are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday. Semifinals are slated for 10 a.m., with consolation finals at 2 p.m. The championships are set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Consolation bracket matches will be going on throughout the weekend.

Caleb Robinson, a two-time Section Four champion and three-time place winner at the state tournament, is making his fourth straight appearance at the states. He’s placed second, fourth, and fifth in his previous state tournaments.

Robinson, who is 44-2 this season and won his 200th high school match when he won the Section Four title, holds school records for wins in a season, pins in a season (30, this year), and overall pins (110).

Robinson is seeded second at states and opens with senior Nathan Recore (39-4) of Section Two’s Tamarac.

Chandler Merwin won the Section Four title this year and placed second in the state last year, which was his first trip to states. He is 39-5 this season and has won 142 matches during high school.

Merwin is the top seed at 126 pounds in Division II, and opens with Tyler Wyman (26-6), a sophomore from Hackley.

Cody Merwin is making his first trip to the state tournament, and is unseeded at 113. As a sophomore, Merwin is 40-3 and has already amassed 105 victories in high school.

He won his first Section Four championship this year and opens the state tournament against eighth-seeded Bandon Fallon (36-4), a junior out of Petrides. If Merwin wins that match, there’s a chance he could see top-seeded Anthony Noto (35-1), a junior from Section Five’s Honeoye Falls-Lima, in the second round.
