As a Walton High School sophomore, Nancy Kilpatrick witnessed the opening of high school sports for females. From the 1972-73 season through 1974-75 she was a member of the field hockey, volleyball, basketball and softball teams – four seasons being the norm then. She also participated in gymnastics, cheerleading and archery.
During her first year on the basketball team, the Warriors claimed the Susquenango East crown and followed suit two years later with a second Sus title. Following her senior athletic campaign, Nancy was named Walton’s most outstanding female athlete, and even received recognition in a national women’s sports magazine.
Unfortunately, she played in an era when not much coverage was given to female sports. Many of the accolades girls have today were not present then. No all-star teams were picked, but Nancy assuredly would have been one in any of the sports she participated in.
This was a time when her basketball team wore their black gym suits for uniforms and their coach cut out their numbers from orange felt.
Nancy’s love of sports and giving opportunities to student-athletes prevailed after her graduation in 1975 as she returned to coach a variety of sports at Walton. And since 1976, she has scored volleyball matches.
