The Townsend Elementary Ag Club is learning about growing plants with just water with the district’s hydroponic tower. The first crop of lettuce was planted and harvested by the club members.
If you’ve gone past Townsend at night, you may have seen the glow of the lights on the tower. The tower was hard at work nourishing the plants, and the tower waters the plants throughout the day. When the crop was harvested recently, it had produced a half-pound of lettuce.
The lettuce was shared with the cafeteria, who washed and served it on a Friday pizza day. Elementary Principal Melanie Hector was the first in line to have one of the salads.
Other salad ingredients are scheduled to be grown over the summer in the school’s greenhouse.
