Townsend School Routine – Information for Parents and Guardians

1. Parent and guardian access: Our tardy bell rings at 8:10 a.m. Once that bell rings, only authorized school staff may go to classrooms. This means that parents and guardians of students in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade cannot go to any classroom once the 8:10 a.m. tardy bell rings. If you arrive with your student after the tardy bell rings, please report to the main office and sign in. We will then assist you. We will see that students arrive safely to their classes if they are late. See No. 2 for additional information.

2. Report to the main office: When you are buzzed into the building, please report to the main office. Parents and guardians may no longer go directly to the nurse's office or to any other location within the building upon arrival. All parents and guardians must report to the main office when admitted to the building and sign in at the main office. We will then assist you.

3. Special events: Occasionally, we do have special events throughout the year for students. We will make special arrangements for those events and notify parents and guardians of changes to our standard routine when we have special events, both for individual classrooms and school-wide events.
4. UPK: UPK students, in the AM, are dropped off at the playroom across from the front entrance. They are supervised by the UPK classroom aide and go to the classroom as a group. Parents will wait in the front foyer at the 10:45 a.m. dismissal and the whole class will be brought up to meet them. UPK PM students will be dropped off at the front foyer at 12 p.m. to the UPK classroom aide. They will gather as a group and walk to class together. At the 2:45 p.m. dismissal, all UPK students getting picked up will go in the playroom with the aide to wait for their pickup. If your child arrives late for either class, please come to the office and we will walk them down to the classroom.
5. Arrival of students in the morning: Please do not drop off students earlier than 7:30 a.m. at Townsend. We do not have supervision for students prior to 7:30 a.m. We know some parents/guardians report to work early. We ask that you make arrangements with neighbors, friends, or family to help you with this so students are not dropped off at Townsend prior to 7:30 a.m. Students can go to the cafeteria at 7:30 am to eat breakfast, which is free for all students.
6. Dismissal at 2:45 p.m.: We no longer allow parents to wait in the school prior to the 2:45 p.m. dismissal, except in the main office. If you are picking up your child at the normal dismissal time, we will open the door when the bell rings at 2:45 p.m., and you can pick your child up in the playroom. If you have other business or plan to pick up students early, follow the above procedures and report to the main office. If you would like your child to meet you outside, please tell that to the child's teacher or the office.

School Attendance

School attendance is a very important part of ensuring that your child receives the best education possible. Unfortunately, circumstances arise and a child may not be able to come to school due to illness, doctor appointments or similar reasons.

Walton Central School is required by law and by our attendance policy to have the parent/guardian provide documentation to the school in writing to state why your child is absent. Our school State Aid is determined by the legal excuses that we receive. If we do not receive an excuse, it is classified as an illegal absence and Walton does not receive State Aid for that child for that day. Therefore, the more absences we have, and the more illegal absences we have, reduces our State Aid. This impacts programs as budgets are prepared based on State Aid projections.

Your diligence in providing excuses for your child's absences will be greatly appreciated. Also, limiting your child's absences whenever you can will help them get the most out of their education and lessons taught, which is our ultimate goal. Thank you for your help in this matter.
