WCS receives Healthy Kids grant
The Walton Central School District recently received word that it would be the recipient of a Healthy Kids grant, which will allow up to 40 sixth graders to participate in the after-school program.

The Healthy Kids 21st Century Literacy Intervention Program would start sometime during next school year and run in two 10-week sessions. For each session, up to 20 Walton students in sixth grade would be able to participate.

The key program component is guided reading. The program would meet three hours per day after school for five days per week, giving each student a total of 45 days.

A schedule would include one-hour blocks Monday through Thursday that would feature literacy, homework, and enrichment (music, art, fitness, sports), and Friday would feature club activities.

Walton will be part of a consortium of eligible schools in small school districts. This program will be entirely funded through the grant and free to families. There will be an on-site director as well as one teacher per 10 students, which is also funded by the grant.

The district will release more information about the program and signing up when available.
