Winter safety tips
With the arrival of winter, extra precautions need to be taken against the cold and snow. The Walton Central School staff works hard to keep the buildings and grounds safe for all students, staff, and visitors. We ask that you do your part to ensure personal safety and the safety of others.
“We want to make sure everybody is safe,” Walton Superintendent Roger Clough said. “The weather can change quickly, so being prepared for whatever might come will help all at our district be safe.”
Clough noted the following tips for winter safety:
1. Wear appropriate clothing (hats, gloves, scarves, boots etc.): Cars and buses may be warm, but a fire alarm or an emergency on a bus could leave students and staff outside in the cold. Wearing shorts or short-sleeve shirts could mean students are outside in clothes not made for winter weather.
2. Watch for wet floors: Mats and carpets at the entrances to the schools limit melting snow on school floors, and custodians routinely dry floors. However, boots can carry snow far into the building, so please watch your step at all times.
3. Watch for slippery sidewalks:  The WCS maintenance staff works extremely hard to keep sidewalks and parking lots free of snow and ice, but a sudden change in temperature, or something like snow squalls, can make walking a challenge.
4. Drive with extra care: Allow yourself extra distance for stopping, and watch for pedestrians walking across parking lots and roadways.
If we all do our part with the winter weather, we can make it as safe as possible for our students, staff, and community.
