Voters to consider 2018-19 school budget
Voters in the Walton Central School District will head to the polls on the district’s proposed $20,864,607 budget for the 2018-19 school year. The proposal increases spending 1.65 percent, or $338,810 compared to the current school year. It also carries a 1.56 percent tax levy increase – at the district’s limit under New York’s tax cap law.

The proposal requires a simple majority of 50 percent plus one vote to pass.

Residents will also consider a proposition to continue the district’s practice of leasing school buses. In the past, the district purchased buses, incurring high repair costs as they aged. Leasing ensures the district maintains a modern and safe bus fleet at the least cost to the taxpayer.
This year’s referendum will authorize the district to lease three 65-passenger buses for five years. Because district receives state aid on the leases, the net cost to the district would be no greater than $14,000 per year.

In a third proposition, the Willian B Ogden Free Library is seeking an additional $1,804 or 1.5 percent in funding for the coming year. Under state law, schools must present library propositions at the annual budget vote and must collect any resulting taxes. The library budget, however, is not part of the district budget.

Residents will also elect two members to the school board for three-year terms beginning July 1, 2018 and ending June 30, 2021. Candidates are Ronda L. Williams, Joyce K. Bishop, and Arnold A. Drumm.

The budget vote and board of education election takes place from noon-9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15 at the school bus garage on Delaware Street. To be eligible to vote, you must be a US citizen, 18 years of age or older and a district resident for at least 30 days prior to the vote.
The board will present the budget proposal at the annual budget hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1 in the Board of Education room at the high school.
