Veteran visits WCS physical education classes
Local retired Army Sargent Christopher McGinnis recently visited middle school and high school physical education classes to help wrap up a volleyball unit.
McGinnis, a Bainbridge-Guilford graduate, came to talk about and show what seated volleyball is. The sport is part of the Warrior Games, a multi-sport event for wounded, injured or ill-sevice personnel, and veterans organized by the United States Department of Defense.
Established in 2010, the Warriors Games are a way to enhance the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded warriors, and to expose them to adaptive sports.
McGinnis made the team and participated in the 2017 Warrior Games in Chicago. He and his team placed second and won a silver medal in seated volleyball. It was featured on ESPN and Good Morning America to raise awareness for the games.
McGinnis introduced this version of the game with a small message: “Live can be tough but don’t let your circumstances define you.. You can overcome anything that is thrown your way.”
He’s currently in Texas, trying out for the upcoming event, which is in June.
