Drug addiction documentary to be shown at Walton CSD
As part of an educational forum being held at the Walton Central School District, the documentary Smacked! Heroin Addiction & Recovery in Rural America will be shown at the Walton Central School District on Tuesday, April 10.

The event starts at 6 p.m. Following the documentary, which runs a bit more than an hour, there will be a question-and-answer session with the filmmakers.

The documentary, which was filmed by Delaware County videographer Jessica Vecchione and journalist Lillian Browne, looks at the insidious nature of narcotic addiction and how it gained a stranglehold on millions of people across the country, and what makes rural America especially vulnerable to problems like a drug epidemic.

Vecchione and Browne go behind the scenes and look at the life of an addict, their relapses, struggles, and victories; and how law enforcement tackles illicit drugs. The documentary also covers what the medical community has done to contribute and resolve the issue.

Filmed over the course of two years, there has been a change in how the drug epidemic is viewed – first as a dirty little secret, and now as a disease.

The filmmakers look into the lives of those dealing with this deadly problem, and what they say the solution is. The documentary was largely filmed in Delaware County.

The showing of this documentary is part of a series of educational sessions being held at Walton Central School District this spring.

“This epidemic is hurting communities throughout this area, the state, and the country,” Walton Superintendent Roger Clough said. “This is an important documentary for people to see. I hope the community comes out to watch so we can all continue the conversation on how to battle this issue.”
