Walton BOE reviews preliminary budget proposal
The Walton Central School District Board of Education held a workshop on April 10, and looked at district finances and budget projections.
WCS Business Manager Tim Maguire shared a rough draft of a proposed budget based on last year’s budget, changes to programs, state aid, and the district’s tax levy limit.
His key points were:
  • The district’s tax levy limit is 1.5584 percent or $100,476. This is the maximum the district can increase the total amount of taxes collected without approval of a supermajority of votes cast (greater than 60 percent)
  • His recommended 2018-19 budget would be $20,864,607, an increase of 1.43 percent or $293,810 compared to 2017-18.
  • The proposal includes the addition of driver education, and Broome CCC’s Fast Forward programs.
  • The budget vote will include a referendum to lease three (3) new buses.
The board discussed the new programs, Walton’s summer school program, and the increase in transportation costs. The BOE will review the presentation and make any changes members deemed necessary.

The board will adopt the 2018-19 proposed budget at a public meeting on Tuesday, April 17. Residents will vote on the proposal noon-9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15 at the school bus garage.
