Middle school student wins Bassett essay contest
Teacher Megan Loomis presents a certificate to Rachel Trimbell
This past fall, seventh-grade students in health education had the opportunity to visit Mary Imogene Bassett Medical Center in Walton.
During this trip, students took part in a three-hour interactive session focusing on the danger of smoking, the benefits of regular exercise, a heart-healthy diet, and how to identify foods conducive to a healthy lifestyle. The program also included a presentation of a recorded heart surgery.
Following the trip, students also had the chance to participate in an essay contest. Classes from various school districts participate in this program.
Walton student Rachel Trimbell recently found out that she won the contest. It’s the second year in a row a Walton student won the contest, as Madison Serra won last year.
Trimbell’s winning essay, titled “Not heart-healthy” is attached below in PDF format.
For winning, she received a certificate, a gift card for Dick’s Sporting Goods, and is entered for a grand prize given at the end of the year.
