For the first time in school history, four wrestlers have advanced to the state tournament. The state tournament for Division I and Division II will be held this weekend at the Times Union Center in Albany.

Junior Caleb Robinson (120 pounds) leads the contingent as he makes his third straight appearance at the state tournament. He placed second at 113 pounds last year. Senior Bailey Wood (285), junior Chandler Merwin (113), and freshman Cody Merwin (99) all are making their first trip to states.

Robinson earned an automatic berth by winning the Section Four Division II title. The other three, who won class titles and placed second at sectionals, earned wild-card berths.

Three Walton Central School District seniors were honored Thursday in a small mid-year graduation ceremony.

The three students – Brennan DelBalso, Chelsey Hood, and Diamond Otto, received their diplomas from Walton Superintendent Roger Clough, High School Principal Rob Knuschke, and Assistant Principal Mark Lamoreaux.

Students in Sal Salvia’s manufacturing class recently completed a project to make box acoustic guitars. 

Materials and manufacturing surrounds people in various aspects during life. Students were able to manipulate basic hand tools, machines, and equipment commonly found in a wood-working lab to build the box guitar. 

Following plans for the guitar, the class worked as a team to construct the guitar. Similar to a factory assembly line, the class worked together and was assigned jobs that best fit their strengths. Some of those jobs included part inspector, assembler, fabricator, assembly manager, organization manager, and stain worker.

The Walton Central School high school PTSA will hold a corn hole tournament from 5-9 p.m. on Saturday, February 10.

Students in Jennifer Bartlett’s ninth-grade English classes finished reading and studying “The Merchant of Venice,” and followed that up by putting William Shakespeare on trial for racial prejudice.

Shakespeare’s portrayal of the Jew, Shylock, and his comments about the Prince of Morocco and his dark complexion caused some to feel that Shakespeare was a racist.
