On Wednesday, February 14, the Walton Central School District celebrated the 100th day of school.

First-graders in Beth Core’s class broke into three groups to try and build a tower using 100 cups. The students had to communicate and talk with one another to build the structure. In the end, so well-balanced structures were built (and also taken down)!

The Walton Central School District will hold its annual kindergarten registration on February 15 at Townsend Elementary.

The times are set for 8-10 a.m., and 3-5 p.m.

If your child is turning five-years-old on or before December 1, 2018, he or she is eligible to register for kindergarten.

During the holiday season the second graders at Townsend Elementary opted to bring in supplies of paper goods, snacks, and coffee to help stock the Walton fire hall, instead of exchanging gifts in their classrooms.

During, or after an emergency, firemen gather at the fire hall, and the auxiliary provides food and drink. Supplies are also needed when they gather to plan services and attend meetings.

Students in Wendy LeBarge’s third-grade class were learning about how weather and climates can have an effect on communities around the world. 
 
Along with that lesson, the class read a Magic Tree House book titles “Earthquake in the Early Morning.” The book, by Mary Pope Osborne, focuses on the great earthquake that happened in California in 1906. 
 
LeBarge opted to use the district’s Lego kits to tie the topics together.

Two Townsend Elementary students had a strong showing recently in a national math contest. 

The 12th biannual Noetic Learning Math Contest, was a national problem-solving contest for elementary students in grades 2-6. The goal is to increase interest in mathematics and develop problem-solving skills. Walton’s contest was open to fifth graders and was sponsored by the Townsend Elementary PTA. Thirty-five students were invited to participate, said teacher Anne Hartman.
