For the fourth time out of four years, a third-grade class at Townsend Elementary has been selected as contest winners for the annual Water Resources Art and Poetry Contest, which is put on by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.

Each year, third graders in Barb Geidel’s library class research local history about the towns that were lost because of building the Cannonsville Reservoir. The students also talk about New York City and the need for clean, healthy water from upstate.

Walton Central School’s Class of 2017 valedictorian Jared Webler, and teacher Ken Wagner, were recently honored at the Scholar Recognition program at SUNY Oneonta.

The event recognized students and teachers from schools in the DCMO BOCES and ONC BOCES districts.

The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) is holding a local information session about the program to provide tuition-free college at New York’s public colleges and universities to families making up to $125,000 via the Excelsior Scholarship.

The event is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday, May 25 at SUNY Delhi in the Sanford Hall Centennial Center. The event is open to the public. Students, parents, and faculty are encouraged to attend to learn how they can benefit from the scholarship.

The Walton Central School District recently received word that it would be the recipient of a Healthy Kids grant, which will allow up to 40 sixth graders to participate in the after-school program.

The Healthy Kids 21st Century Literacy Intervention Program would start sometime during next school year and run in two 10-week sessions. For each session, up to 20 Walton students in sixth grade would be able to participate.

Tina Ammon’s second-grade class invited parents to the classroom Monday morning for a celebration of Mother’s Day.

Each student had a guest, welcomed them in the hall, and brought them into the class. They then ate muffins and had juice.

Walton Central School District voters went to the poll on Tuesday, May 16 and approved the district’s proposed 2017-18 school budget and proposed school bus lease.

The $20,530,797 budget increases spending 1.97 percent or $397,571 over the current year and carries a tax levy increase of 1.37 percent.

The surveys for parents are for the elementary, middle, and high schools. For students, it’s for the middle and high schools. If parents have students in more than one school, they are welcome to take the survey for each school they have children in.
